After the first 40 minutes of the 2016 season, the North Marion girls soccer team were looking up at 2-0 deficit. But it didn't take long for the Huskies to come roaring back, scoring a goal three minutes into the second half of their Thursday game against Seaside en route to a 2-2 draw in their season opener.

The Huskies were down quickly against the visiting Seagulls, who scored in the first 10 minutes of the game to go up 1-0. North Marion got its opportunity to even the score 10 minutes later when sophomore forward Mar Verastegui was fouled in the box, giving the Huskies a penalty kick.

Fellow sophomore Emma Holum took the kick for North Marion, but the shot ricocheted off the crossbar, allowing the Seagulls to maintain their lead.

Seaside doubled it up at the 30-minute mark on a goalkeeper bobble, and the Huskies entered halftime down 2-0.

Coming out of the half, junior midfielder Melany Bahena injected some life into the game with a goal of her own to cut Seagull's lead in half. North Marion put the finishing touches on the rally in the 75th minute, when Verastegui took a pass from junior defender Camry Jones and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2, several minutes before the final whistle put an end to the game.

It was the third consecutive draw between the two teams, who have played each other in non-conference contests in each of hte past three seasons. The Huskies and Seagulls played to a 1-1 draw last year and were knotted up at 2-2 in their 2014 game. Prior to that, the last time the two schools played each other was five years ago when North Marion earned a 2-0 road victory in the play-in round of the 2011 postseason.

The Huskies' 2-2 draw on Thursday continues a trend of season-opening success for the North Marion program. Since 2009, the Huskies have lost just one season opener (2014) and have gone 4-1-3 in the past eight years.

The North Marion girls soccer team continues its season this week on the road against the Gladstone Gladiators on Thursday, followed by its final non-conference game at 5A Central on Sept. 13.
