JO WHEAT - North Marion senior Randy Uriarte pulls down one of three interceptions that the Huskies picked off against Newport on Friday.

The Huskies bounced back from last week’s home loss to Gladstone to pick up a 21-6 victory over the hosting Newport Cubs in the Oregon West Conference opener for both teams.

North Marion senior Boston Snyder put the Huskies on the board first, scoring on a six-yard run in the first quarter to give his team a 7-0 lead. But the two teams were held scoreless for the next two quarters before the Huskies doubled their advantage on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Ammon Suchanski in the fourth.

The Cubs responded in kind later in the quarter, but North Marion senior quarterback Hunter Martin sealed the deal on a two-yard keeper to give the Huskies their final margin of victory.

Suchanski led all players with 102 rushing yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Snyder added 34 yards and a touchdown on five carries and caught five passes for 79 yards.

Martin was 8-of-18 behind center for 121 yards and two interceptions.

On defense, the Huskies forced three interceptions, including one each by senior Randy Uriarte and sophomore Grant Henry.

North Marion (2-2, 1-0 OWC) will take to the road once again on Friday, playing the Yamhill-Carlton Tigers (1-3, 0-1 OWC).
