GSC: Huskies open league schedule unbeaten

PHIL HAWKINS - North Marion sophomore Viance Aguirre helped lift the Huskies to a 3-0 victory over the Newport Cubs on Sept. 20 with a pair of goals.
After going winless in their first four non-conference games, the North Marion girls soccer team came alive to open their league schedule, punishing the Newport Cubs in a 3-0 victory on Sept. 20 and following with a 1-1 draw against the visiting Yamhill-Carlton Tigers on Thursday.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Huskies who went scoreless in each loss since opening the season with a 2-2 draw against Seaside.
It was sophomore midfielder Emma Holum who broke the shutout streak in the first half, when she connected on a pass from forward Mar Verastegui to put North Marion ahead 1-0 in the 30th minute.
After halftime, the Huskies struck again when fellow midfielder Viance Aguirre scored in the 48th minute on an assist from sophomore Blanca Diaz. Aguirre doubled up just before time expired, taking a pass from senior Sonia Jimenez in the 80th minute for a goal to bring North Marion to its margin of victory.
The win marked the continued dominance of North Marion over their conference rivals from the coast. Although the Huskies have been unable to finish in the top half of the league standings since joining the Oregon West Conference in 2014, they have enjoyed their most success against the Cubs, going 3-1-1 with all three victories coming in big shutouts.
The following game, North Marion scored a come-from-behind draw against the visiting Tigers, who opened the game with a goal from 30 yards out by defender Andie Jo Whitlow in the 17th minute.
The Huskies appeared to be on the verge of losing the contest, before senior Sonia Jimenez scored on a late goal to send the game into a draw as time expired.
North Marion (1-3-2, 1-0-1 Oregon West Conference) was scheduled to travel to No. 9 Philomath (4-2, 2-0 OWC) on Tuesday before returning home on Thursday for a contest against the Stayton Eagles (1-4-1, 0-2 OWC).
