FB: Huskies pour on the offense in shootout win over Tigers

JO WHEAT - North Marion senior Tanner Scanlan burned the Yamhill-Carlton defense frequently on Friday, catching seven passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns.

The North Marion football team was able to overcome four turnovers in an offensive shootout with Yamhill-Carlton on Friday night, beating the Tigers 41-33 to become the first team in the Oregon West to reach 2-0 in the conference standings.

The Huskies (3-2, 2-0 Oregon West Conference) went back-and-forth against the hosting Tigers (1-4, 0-2 OWC) in the first half of Fridays game before blowing the contest open in the second half to cruise to victory behind a five-touchdown performance from quarterback Hunter Martin.

Martin enjoyed a breakout game, passing for 255 yards and connecting with fellow senior Tanner Scanlan seven times for 181 yards and three touchdowns. In total, the Huskies put up a season-best 544 yards on offense, overcoming three lost fumbles an interception that helped the Tigers stay within striking distance for much of the game.

The Tigers were the first to get on the scoreboard, but the Huskies answered back on a 44-yard connection from Martin to Scanlan to tie the game up at 7-7. Another Yamhill-Carlton touchdown was met with another big play from the North Marion duo, this time for 57 yards, as the two teams went into the second quarter tied at 13-13.

The Huskies took their first lead of the game on a 27-yard pass from Martin to Bryce Lemon, but the Tigers answered back and the two teams entered the half tied at 20-20.

But North Marion was able to simply outgun Yamhill-Carlton in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points to take a 41-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

The Tigers were able to mount a comeback, scoring a pair of late touchdowns, but didn’t have enough time to complete the rally.

In addition to Scanlan’s big receiving night, teammate Boston Snyder came down with two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Ammon Suchanski added 14 yards on two catches and led the team in rushing with 113 yards on 17 carries. Senior Sam Garcia added 86 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while Snyder chipped in 48 yards on eight touches.

North Marion takes an unanticipated bye this week following the cancellation of the Philomath football team’s varsity season. The Huskies were scheduled to host the Warriors on Friday for homecoming night, but Philomath’s season was nixed due to a hazing incident that took place over the summer that resulted in six players and one assistant coach being cited.

North Marion attempted to reschedule a new opponent, but were unable to and the homecoming game was moved to the end of the season when the Huskies host the Cascade Cougars (2-3, 1-1 OWC) on Oct. 21.

Following the bye week, the Huskies will take the field for a third consecutive road game at Stayton (2-2, 1-0 OWC) on Oct. 13.
